The ‘series’ PHEV architecture decouples the thermo-mechanical device from the wheels of the vehicle, thereby enabling the generator to run at constant load to achieve optimal efficiency, and simplifying the vehicle construction by eliminating the mechanical powertrain entirely.

Alternatively, in a scenario where battery technology advances to such an extent that range and recharging limitations disappear entirely, the onboard generator may be dropped from the configuration, thus returning to the pure BEV. It is no exaggeration to say that the series PHEV concept is essentially future-proof, while simultaneously being compatible with today’s infrastructure.

Ford-owned Volvo’s performance claims even overshadow GM’s Volt: in-wheel motors propel the ReCharge up to 100 km on electricity alone, following which the fuel consumption may range from zero to 5.5 litres per 100 km.202 For a 150 km drive starting with a full charge, the effective fuel economy of the ReCharge would be 1.9 litres per 100 km (equivalent to 124 miles per gallon). In all-electric mode, Volvo projects operating costs around eighty percent lower than those of a comparable petroleum-powered vehicle.

The BYD company of China may be the first production PHEV using Series Hybrid Technology. Charging of the iron-chemistry battery is via a 220-V household power outlet. The hybrid system allows the engine to supplement the electric motor when rapid acceleration is needed, but for most of the time it is used to drive a generator to power the electric motor.

When David Sokol toured BYD's operations last summer, Wang took him to a battery factory and explained that BYD wants to make its batteries 100% recyclable. To that end, the company has developed a nontoxic electrolyte fluid. To underscore the point, Wang poured battery fluid into a glass and drank it. "Doesn't taste good," he said, making a face and offering a sip to Sokol.
